How to Become More Eco-Friendly When It Comes to Your Electronics

– Lane Simond:

The holidays are just around the corner and that means a lot of shiny new electronics will be under the tree. For some of us the consequences of having a new gadget can kill the excitement of receiving something that is better and faster. Climate concerns associated with energy usage and the manufacturing of electronics, the possibility of toxic elements making it into landfills, and terrible working conditions for those who help extract metals for use in electronics, can’t be dismissed.

At Sparta’s ERS International e-waste facilities located in Toronto and Oman, the focus is recycling and upcycling old electronics; making sure there is zero waste going to landfill. ERS serves businesses but what about the average consumer?

Eco-friendly electronics usage – rules to live by

• Repair what you have – In a lot of cases, there is really no reason why you can’t get your current device repaired. Manufacturers like Apple and Samsung offer repair kits. Also iFixit has a guide, as well as various tools you need to fix your devices.

• Buy refurbished – There are times when your device is beyond repair, but you can shop for a refurbished replacement. Often, they are discounted so you can also save a bit of money. People tend to think a lower price means lower quality, but that is not always the case.

• Think about energy usage – Some devices have labels that indicate that the product is energy efficient. Buying an energy-efficient gadget can save power. Many people are familiar with energy-efficient appliances or using an eco-mode. When purchasing an electronic device check to see if it has an energy saving symbol. Energy Star is one example.

• Ask retailers about their sustainability efforts – Does the company you are shopping at have eco-friendly brands? does it take back old electronics, and does it deal with a reputable e-waste recycler? Sparta’s ERS has worked with some of the most recognizable brands in the country.

• Be smart when disposing of old electronics – It’s a given that you will eventually upgrade to new devices but try to give your old device a new life. You can pass it on to someone else who can use it, return the old device to the store where you bought it. They might even have a buy-back program. Apple and Microsoft take old devices. Also, Dell has been known to take back electronics it didn’t manufacture.

While some people think it is complicated to figure out what to do about an old electronic, the list we have provided, demonstrates it is possible to keep it out of landfill. Climate change impacts all of us and dealing with electronics responsibility could be your first step in helping minimize environmental damage.
